Steve Morse – My Personal Picking Exercise

“While studying at the University of Miami, I always made up little exercises to try to keep up with all the great guitarists there. One of them, Stan Samole, heard me practicing this one and transcribed it for some of his students.

This little exercise is all in triplets. It’s mostly arpeggios, which are rarely found in rock and roll. I made it into a classical-sounding progression, just so it wouldn’t be as boring as playing an arpeggio up and down the neck. I had been studying a lot of Spanish-style guitar with Juan Mercadel, a classical guitarist who was my teacher. I find this type of arpeggiating very difficult, and recommend going slowly to get every note clean. I know that if I can pick this one accurately, I can play anything else in my repertoire with a pick.

The Roman numerals indicate hand positions. The occasional circled numbers below the notes tell which string to finger the note on. If it’s not obvious, pick down, up, down, up – regardless of how unnatural it may feel.”
